School Visits
I love talking about writing and illustrating, and I'd love to talk about writing and illustrating at your school, library, or conference. There are a few different formats I offer, depending on the size and age of the audience.
Elementary
For elementary students (1st-5th grade) I discuss how I became an author-illustrator, where I get my ideas, read one of my books out loud, and do a drawing demonstration. This is a 30 minute presentation for groups of 15 to 50 students.
For large assemblies, I present a slide show on where I get my ideas, how books are published, and how students can practice creativity. I end by reading a book and giving a drawing demonstration. This presentation is 30 to 45-minutes (your choice) with an optional Q&A. I also enjoy giving this slide show presentation to small groups, if your classroom is equipped for slide shows, so I can tailor the discussion for each age group.
I also offer writing workshops for groups of 15 to 50 students. We discuss the elements every good story needs, make an outline of the ups and downs of a true story, and then turn it on its head into a fictional masterpiece.
Middle School and High School
For middle and high school students, I present a slide show and discuss research, writing, and creative practices. I'll show how I make a book, from sketches through revisions and final art techniques. We'll also discuss how books are published, covering my time as a picture book designer at Random House.
I also offer book-making workshops for groups of 15 to 50 students. We discuss story-telling elements, how to use design to tell a story, and then create a simple book dummy.
Full Day Visits include three activities (choose any combination of workshops, large assemblies, and small assemblies) and a book signing. A pre-sale through your local bookstore works best, and I provide custom order forms to keep things easy.
Single Presentation Visits include one activity and a book signing. These are only available in the state of Michigan.
