I love talking about writing and illustrating, and I'd love to talk about writing and illustrating at your school, library, or conference. My presentations can be adjusted to suit the age and size of any audience.
Elementary & Middle school
For 1st-8th grade student assemblies, I present a slideshow about how I went from being a kid who liked to write and draw to a professional writer and illustrator. I show books I made as a kid (one is called Book, A Book), and discuss the elements of a good story. I read one of my published books and show my secret book-making process, followed by a simple drawing demonstration and Q&A.
I also offer small group writing workshops. We discuss where writers can find story ideas, and work together to turn elements of a true story into a fictional masterpiece.
High School & Adults
For older students and adults, I talk about the steps I take in creating a published book, from initial notes and research, to character creation and book design. We'll also discuss the publishing industry, covering my time as a picture book designer at Random House.
Full Day Visits include three activities (choose a combination of workshops and assemblies) and a book signing. Pre-sales through your local bookstore work best, or you can order directly through a publisher. Education discounts are often available, which is a great way for schools and libraries to earn extra money. And, I provide custom order forms to send home with students to keep things easy.
Single Presentation Visits include one activity and a book signing. These are available only in Northern Michigan.
